Wellbutrin is an antidepressant prescription drug. Manufactured under the name Zyban, the same drug is often used for smoking cessation. When clinically depressed patients, who also smoked cigarettes, were given Wellbutrin, many of them stopped smoking. Because of this unforeseen side effect, many doctors began prescribing the drug to smokers who were not depressed. This is just one example of a medical treatment that can be prescribed for two or more different uses in the medical field. Back braces are another. My daughter wore a lumbar support brace for quite some time due to curvature of the spine. Her spine was not straight like it should be. Instead, the middle of her spine curved to the right. Curvature of the spine affects many children, which is why school nurses and pediatricians often check for the condition.

Treatment is dependent upon the degree of curvature and when the condition is found. Sometimes, exercises can correct the condition. Other times, a back brace is needed to correct the problem. In extreme cases, surgery is needed.

A lumbar support brace is also used to correct other spinal abnormalities, treat vertebral fractures, and hold the back and spine in place following back surgery. Chiropractors often ask patients to wear a back brace in order to correct posture issues. Many chiropractic problems are due to poor posture, and a brace can help to correct those issues and limit the number of adjustments that are needed.
